Who the Indie Spotlight Misses

The indie scene is a double-edged sword, and I think it’s time we admitted that.
I love how small and intimate it can be. I love people supporting each other, making work with no budget and a lot of heart. That part matters.
But it’s also frustrating to watch the same handful of people get praised endlessly, not always for the strongest work, but for being visible, bubbly, marketable, or constantly flaunting themselves onscreen.
There are so many directors, actors, writers, and crew on and off screen who are working relentlessly, growing, taking risks, and telling meaningful stories, yet they’re overlooked because they aren’t loud, trendy, or part of the “approved” indie circle.
Indie should be about the work.
Not clout. Not aesthetics. Not who knows who.
If we really care about independent film, we need to widen the spotlight and make room for those who are creating with depth, discipline, and intention, even if they don’t fit the current indie mold.
Supporting art also means asking why we praise what we praise. 🎬
